Following Henryk Sienkiewicz's international recognition for 'Quo Vadis' in 1896 and his 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature, Parisian publisher Ernest Flammarion issued illustrated translations of his shorter antique novellas between 1901 and 1904. The French National Library (BnF) catalogues this undated Styka-illustrated edition to circa 1901. Jan Styka had earned critical acclaim in 1898 for his 'Golgotha' panorama, which led directly to his commissioning for Sienkiewicz's religious-historical works.
