The concept of "Shiny" Pokémon was first introduced in the video games Pokémon Gold and Silver (1999), where players had a 1 in 8,192 chance of encountering a Pokémon with an alternate color scheme.

Rayquaza's design is inspired by various Eastern dragons from Chinese and Japanese mythology, as well as the Lindworm from Norse and Germanic folklore. It is said to live in the ozone layer, descending only when its fellow legendaries, Groudon and Kyogre, clash.
