Operating from 1792 until the 1971 Postal Reorganization Act, this federal agency managed the production of all American postage and postal stationery within the United States. It issued the first national stamps in 1847 and oversaw the Pony Express era. A 24-cent Inverted Jenny stamp from the 1918 airmail series set a record by selling for $2 million at auction in November 2023.
