ANONYMOUS ORIENTALIST WATERCOLOR SKETCH OF AN ARNAUT: IDENTIFICATION
A 19th-century watercolor and graphite sketch on an irregularly trimmed sheet of paper, depicting a seated male figure in Ottoman dress. The subject is identified by handwritten annotations in the lower register reading 'Ali Baba - Arnaut' in Latin cursive, followed by 'Αλί βαβα' (Ali Baba) and additional partially legible script in Greek. The artwork is housed in a later, rustic miter-joined wooden frame with a rigid cardboard backing secured by bent iron nails and a twine hanging loop.

Confidence Factors
THE ART SPECIALIST'S TAKE
Museum-Trained Art Historian
The medium, subject matter, and aging characteristics are clearly legible, though the lack of artist attribution limits a definitive origin point.
CONDITION & GRADE
Grading breakdown
Grade is severely limited by the prominent water stain penetrating the upper register, extensive foxing indicative of mold or iron oxidation, and overall acidic toning of the paper substrate.
Condition
The paper support exhibits severe overall toning and extensive brown foxing spots throughout the composition. A large, prominent water stain halo dominates the upper half of the sheet above the figure's head. The paper edges are unevenly hand-cut or torn. The rustic wooden frame shows general wear and the cardboard backing exhibits acidic deterioration.

YOUR INPUT VS. SCAN
How your provided context compares with Curiosa.com scanner findings.
What Aligned
- The user's assertion of 'Original/Authentic' aligns with the visible characteristics of original watercolor and graphite application, rather than a mechanical reproduction.
What Conflicted
- The user's assessment of 'Minor wear' strongly conflicts with the visual evidence; the paper suffers from severe water staining and extensive foxing, placing it in Poor to Fair condition.
