Struck in 1987 to commemorate the Golden Wedding Anniversary of the former Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard (married January 7, 1937), this 50 Gulden coin was part of a larger trend of high-denomination silver commemoratives in the late Dutch Gulden era. The coin's geometric, modern design reflects 1980s Dutch minimalist aesthetics, contrasting with the more classical portraiture of previous eras.

NUMISMATIST'S ASSESSMENT

Numismatist

Numismatic Specialist

Identification is near-certain due to clear inscriptions and high-quality photography showing diagnostic mint marks and era-typical surfaces.

KEY EVIDENCE

  • 1Inscription '1937 * 1987' and '50 JAAR' confirms the specific anniversary event
  • 2Hallmark of the Royal Dutch Mint (caduceus) visible below the denomination
  • 3Weight and diameter proportions are consistent with .925 silver specs (25g/38mm)
  • 4Peripheral toning pattern suggests storage in a non-inert environment over several decades

WHAT WOULD IMPROVE CERTAINTY

  • →Verify weight on a digital scale to ensure 25.0 grams within ±0.1g tolerance
  • →Check the edge for the incuse lettering 'GOD ZIJ MET ONS'

CONDITION & GRADE

AU-55 to MS-60

Grading breakdown

The coin retains full detail but lacks the pristine luster of a higher-state Mint State (MS) example due to handling. The heavy toning affects the eye appeal, likely placing it at the boundary of About Uncirculated and low-level Mint State.

Condition

The surfaces exhibit significant brown-orange peripheral toning, which may be reaching 'terminal' stages of oxidation on the edges. There are visible contact marks on the open fields, particularly on the obverse behind the Queen's profile. No signs of harsh cleaning are evident.

NUMISMATIC VALUATION

$25 - $40

Who buys this

Dutch national history collectors and silver bullion stackers looking for low-premium sterling items.

What increases value

  • •Current spot price of silver (25.0g at .925 purity)
  • •Collector interest in the House of Orange-Nassau

What lowers value

  • •Excessive toning or 'environmental damage' labels if sent for professional grading
  • •Surface scratches (bag marks) in highly reflective fields

What makes top-tier examples

  • •Proof-like surfaces with deep mirrored reflectivity
  • •Original Royal Dutch Mint packaging (cassette)

Grade & condition

Luster retention, severity of contact marks in the fields, and the aesthetics of the toning.
